What is a student employee (Werkstudent)?

The Werkstudentenprivileg is your best option if you want to work regularly alongside your studies. You may work up to 20 hours per week during term time and longer during semester breaks, with significantly reduced social contributions. ucm offers Werkstudent positions in hospitality, events, retail and logistics.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work more than 20 hours during semester break?

Yes. During the lecture-free period you can work up to 40 h/week without losing Werkstudent status , but in total no more than 26 weeks per year above 20 h.

What happens if you de-register or finish your studies?

Werkstudent status ends immediately on de-registration or graduation. From that point the job becomes subject to social insurance like regular employment.

Do you have to pay wage tax?

Wage tax is automatically deducted from a gross monthly income of around €1,260 (tax class I). With a tax return you get most of it back if your annual income is below the basic allowance (around €12,000).

Does a Werkstudent job affect my BAföG or family insurance?

BAföG: annual income above around €6,240 gross can reduce your funding. Family insurance: regular earnings above €556/month end the coverage , check with your health insurer.
